The world-renowned conductor Seiji Ozawa once described Yu Lu as:
“the most outstanding and talented young conductor that I have ever encountered in my life”.
Yu Lu is the founding chief conductor of the Tide Philharmonic Orchestra. He led the orchestra's inaugural performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in November 2025 at the newly established Yanguan Grand Tide Opera House— the world’s largest wooden concert hall. Tide Philharmonic Orchestra was officially established at the end of 2024 in Yanguan, Haining City, Jiaxing. Initiated by Chen Xianghong, a leading figure in China’s cultural tourism industry, founder of Wuzhen Tourism, and chairman of the Wuzhen Theatre Festival, the orchestra has attracted renowned musicians such as Lang Lang, Chen Guangxian, Fang Yi, He Wei, Dong Dejun, Liu Zhaolu, Xie Nan, Yu Lu, and Zeng Yun to collaborate and inspire. As the first professional symphony orchestra deeply integrated with cultural tourism, rooted in the thousand-year-old town of Yanguan and drawing inspiration from the majestic natural phenomenon of the Qiantang River tide, the orchestra uses the universal language of symphony to explore innovative practices combining music and local culture.
Yu is known for his thorough score preparation and clear non-verbal communication. At the Tide Philharmonic Orchestra, he has pioneered audience-inclusive concepts, actively encouraging concertgoers to record performances and share them on social media.
In May 2025, he and the orchestra performed a "Giants Symphony" concert alongside pianist Lang Lang. Yu Lu conducted a nearly 400-member ensemble composed of theThe Tide Philharmonic Orchestra, in collaboration with the Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra, Ningbo Symphony Orchestra, China National Symphony Orchestra Chorus, the Central Conservatory of Music Choir, and the Lanzhou Concert Hall Choir. They presented a reimagined performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at the Yanguan Grand Tide Opera House, setting a record for the largest orchestral ensemble in a domestic symphonic performance in China.
And in January 2026 Lu and his orchestra presented a “Workout Symphony Concert” with three professional fitness coaches including Taiwanese star coach and entertainer Will Liu.
Born and raised in Ningbo, Zhejiang, Yu Lu began to show his extraordinary talent in music at a very young age by learning to play the violin and the piano. Ranked the first place, he was admitted to the affiliated middle school of the China Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing at the age of 15 and enrolled at China Central Conservatory of Music with the top score in the admission exam at 18. In 2012, Yu Lu received his bachelor degree from the Conducting Department of China Central Conservatory of Music with the highest score in history, where he was waived admission exams to continue his study as a masters student.
At the age of 19, Yu Lu won a contest held by conductor Seiji Ozawa and became his student and assistant conductor. In the same year, he performed successfully with Seiji Ozawa Music Academy Orchestra in the Kyoto Concert Hall and was praised by Ongaku no Tomo (Japan ’ s most preeminent magazine) as “ the role model of all young Japanese conductors ”. Yu Lu received continuous positive feedback from the Japanese audience by conducting Madama Butterfly, which was his first time to conduct an opera. When he was 22, recommended by masters in conducting such as Seiji Ozawa and Semyon Bychkov, Yu Lu was selected and invited by Maestro Mariss Jansons to participate in conducting masterclass, and conduct the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Holland.
The masterclass launched Yu's career in Europe and in the US. Yu Lu performed and recorded with ensembles worldwide, including Camerata RCO with members of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. At the end of 2020, on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven's birth, Yu Lu collaborated with the Chinese video platform Bilibili to conduct the Ningbo Symphony Orchestra in all of Beethoven's symphonies consecutively over five days with full live streaming.
In 2022, the Shanghai Opera House appointed Yu Lu as its first ever principal guest conductor.
On March 23, 2025, Yu Lu completed his first concert series with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The program consisted of pieces by Joey Roukens, Vanessa Lann, Claude Debussy, Pjotr Tchaikovsky, Serge Rachmaninoff, Claudio Monteverdi, Igor Stravinsky, Sergej Prokofiev. “Yu Lu conducted with unflappable composure and precision, while the KCO, as always, delivered a compelling and captivating performance”, according to Nieuwe Muze journal. This marked the first time in the orchestra's 137-year history that it had invited a Chinese conductor to lead.
One year later, Lu made his debut with the Rotterdam Philharmonic at their yearly “Philharmonic Gala” event.
