Close-knit, passionate, and deeply musical—this is the sound of the Storioni Trio. Founded in 1995; celebrating its 30th anniversary in the 2026 season
Bart van de Roer – piano
Wouter Vossen – violin (Laurentius Storioni, Cremona, 1794)
Marc Vossen – cello (Giovanni Grancino, Milan, 1700)

For more than thirty years, the trio has had the privilege of performing in nearly every corner of the world. They have appeared with leading orchestras under the baton of renowned conductors, while finding equal inspiration in chamber music performances: in atmospheric churches, unique venues, and direct encounters with audiences.

Their artistic journey has taken them into recording studios for numerous CDs, to inspiring radio and television programs, and led to the founding of their own Storioni Festival in 2007—a celebration of the music closest to their hearts. Over the years, they have developed extensive knowledge of the repertoire, not only for piano trio but also for chamber music in all its forms, as well as works for trio and orchestra. Their most recent recordings, released on the CPO label, include the Triple Concerto by Hungarian composer Emmanuel Moór, originally written for the Cortot–Thibaud–Casals Trio, as well as Moór’s three piano trios composed for the Schnabel–Flesch–Piatigorsky Trio.
Together with director and actor Thom Hoffman, the trio created the acclaimed productions “”Vleugels”, about Clara and Robert Schumann, and “Beethoven – Wie ben je?”, centered on Ludwig van Beethoven.

Beethoven at the Heart
The Storioni Trio’s Beethoven adventure began more than thirty years ago under the guidance of none other than Menahem Pressler, founder of the Beaux Arts Trio. Since then, the Storioni Trio has found its own voice, bringing its own sense of color and drama to the framework Beethoven provided in his scores.
The trio has performed Beethoven’s complete cycle of piano trios on both period and modern instruments. Their 2013 recording of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto on period instruments, together with the Orchestra of the East conducted by Jan Willem de Vriend, received enthusiastic reviews in the international press. As a result, the Storioni Trio was invited to perform the Triple Concerto with ensembles including the Wiener KammerOrchester, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century under Kenneth Montgomery, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra under Philippe Herreweghe, the St. Gallen Symphony Orchestra under Otto Tausk, PhilZuid under Tung-Chieh Chuang and the Hong Kong Philharmonic under Jaap van Zweden.
These successful experiences opened the door to exploring new and lesser-known repertoire for triple concerto.

Expanding the Repertoire
The Storioni Trio performs works for piano trio ranging from the Classical era to contemporary music, from Haydn to Henze. Building on its extensive expertise in the triple concerto repertoire—including works by Beethoven, Casella, Juon, Martinů, Moór, and Voříšek—the trio has commissioned compositions in recent years from composers such as Kevin Volans, Peter-Jan Wagemans, Nico Muhly, Kalevi Aho, and Willem Jeths.

Building on its international reputation in the triple concerto repertoire, the trio gave the world premiere of Lanterna in 2024, composed by Sebastian Fagerlund, with the Residentie Orchestra and two Finnish orchestras. Together with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, the trio recorded Kalevi Aho’s Triple Concerto for the BIS label, a work commissioned by the ensemble itself.

For many years the trio had a close artistic relationship with Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki until his passing. Penderecki invited the trio on several occasions to perform at his Beethoven Easter Festival in Warsaw and also appeared as Artist in Residence at the Storioni Festival.

The trio has commissioned works from leading contemporary composers including Brett Dean, David Lang, and Theo Loevendie. Loevendie’s Ming is an imaginative work that combines piano trio with the erhu, a traditional two-stringed Chinese bowed instrument.

International Network
The Storioni Trio has performed in chamber music series at venues such as Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall, and the Concertgebouw, and at festivals including Kuhmo, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Osnabrück Kammermusiktage.

International tours have taken the trio to India, the Middle East, Australia, Taiwan, Japan, and the United States.

The Storioni Trio has shared the stage with leading international musicians and rising talents alike, including Gidon Kremer, Joshua Bell, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Nelly Miricioiu, Natalia Gutman, Mischa Maisky, Sol Gabetta, Jörg Widmann, Baiba and Lauma Skride, as well as Niek Baar, Lilli Maijala, Ella van Poucke, Bram van Sambeek, and Annelien Van Wauwe

Reviews

[…] the music was bathed in fun, here the homo ludens in optima forma was speaking. In the opening concert [of the Storioni Festival May 2020] the frolicking Storioni Trio - in Mendelssohn, young Beethoven and Haydn - brought a hymn to life.
— Joost Galema, NRC Handelsblad
Those who might not count the Triple Concerto among Beethoven’s finest works could well be swayed by this intelligently balanced, beautifully played performance.
— Gramophone
Fans of the Archduke Trio op. 97 will be delighted by the Storioni’s reading; crisp playing giving textures real transparency, beautiful lyricism from all three. ... this disc is a winner.
